Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences Phases 1-10

Key Points That Make This Project Unique

The Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences (USUHS) is the National Federal Health Sciences University. Its mission is "Learning to Care for those in Harm's Way". It is a fully accredited University for research and training of doctors and nurses. At any given time USUHS is performing over 300 research projects. Its focus on military medicine became more acute after the threats associated with 9-11.

Grimberg performed under a contract to renovate the entire complex of research lab/office spaces (330,000 square feet) including complete replacement of the HVAC system to provide HVAC capabilities meeting the needs of an office/lab environment.

This project was unique in that it was performed under a new type of contracting method (IDIQ Contract) for the Navy in which delivery orders were awarded based on success of previous delivery orders. It was also unique in that it required the work to be done without disturbing the occupants of the building or the experimental research taking place in the labs (many of which were multi-million dollar experiments through grants from N.I.H.).

The project required room-specific planning and scheduling. The schedule allowed only a few offices and labs to be worked on at a time. The doctors and researchers had to know well in advance when their labs and offices would be worked on so they could schedule their research accordingly. One unique feature of this job was the schedule that was monitored and updated daily with input from the subcontractors, the Navy Contract Administrator and the doctors who operated these spaces. Meeting commitments was critical to the ongoing mission of the University.
