This was a four year, $19 million contract at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences for Naval Facilities Command Washington. The project included a new addition constructed within the existing mezzanine space of the existing building. The contract also required all new mechanical, electrical, plumbing, security, and fire suppression systems in a four-story office and laboratory environment. Grimberg updated office and lab spaces in the main research facilities for USUHS, which conducts advanced laboratory research for agencies nationwide, including NIH. Architectural finishes and tenant buildout, such as glass partitioning, floor coverings, glazing, wall coverings/paint, and millwork was required. Mechanical work involved the removal and replacement of all ceiling systems, including new and relocated fire protection systems directly over the top of existing lab work space, and replacement of all duct work throughout the facility.
This entire project encompassed ten phases with strict sequencing requirements. Each phase had to be completed before the next could be started, and failure to complete a phase on schedule could potentially impact the work of scientists and doctors performing research. The building was also fully occupied, necessitating that work be performed to minimize impact on the tenant. Working within this facility, particularly in the individual offices, required daily coordination with the Navy, USUHS facilities personnel and the user.
