The MAPS project consisted of the new construction of a concrete, steel, and masonry structure wrapped in exterior metal panels to house the chemical munitions disposal facility at Aberdeen Proving Ground.
The facility is located within the secured area of the Edgewood Arsenal and, as a result, an extensive effort was made to locate and remove all unexploded ordnance material in the construction area. The preparation of substantial coordination drawings was required to determine the location of all embeds in the poured-in-place blast chamber, which is housed within this facility.
A significant process control system was installed to perform the munitions disposal operation from a remote location. The project also included a Minicam system to determine the existence of hazardous materials along with a DAMS system which is utilized for detection of hazardous materials within the work space.
The work site was located in N Field at the Edgewood Campus. All unescorted construction personnel had to be cleared and badged. Since this two-month process was impractical for subcontractors who would be on-site for only a short time, Grimberg solved this problem by badging sufficient Grimberg personnel to dedicate as escorts to subcontractors.
