Highlighted Green Construction Experience
Air Sovereignty Alert (ASA) Facility Fighter and Support Complex

Department of the Navy: Andrews Air Force Base, MD

The ASA Facility is a state-of-the-art aircraft prototype complex that involved the construction of a blast-resistant aircraft hangar, crew quarters and living spaces, and related support areas. The facility also included significant sustainable design measures, was LEED certifiable, and was Energy Policy Act of 2005 compliant.

The contractor completed all work to the Navy’s total satisfaction. As a result, Grimberg also received excellent overall ratings for its performance.

Overview

The ASA Facility complex provides critical support for F-22 fighter squadrons in the Washington DC area. The project involved the construction of a blast-resistant aircraft hangar with four maintenance and preparation bays, crew quarters and living spaces, and related areas.

Grimberg worked closely with its design team to develop energy-efficient mechanical and electrical systems, such as fire alarms, plumbing, HVAC, telecom/data wiring, and information systems. Grimberg also installed energy-saving electronic monitoring and control systems.

The resulting LEED certifiable complex highlights the contractor’s commitment to green construction and serves as an excellent example of Grimberg’s ability to deliver facilities that:

  • Conserve energy
  • Conserve water
  • Provide a healthy and safe occupant environment
  • Reduce waste
  • Lower facility operating costs
  • Reduce harmful greenhouse gas emissions
  • Demonstrate environmental stewardship and social responsibility

Additional work involved comprehensive architectural finishes and site improvements, perimeter security features, site utility work, and environmental requirements coordination, including a new stormwater management system.
