Renovation of the National Guard Emergency Response Facility

Maryland Army National Guard: Fort Meade, MD

The award-winning Emergency Response Facility Renovation transformed a dilapidated World War II-era vehicle maintenance building into a state-of-the-art National Guard emergency response and fast alert facility for the 32nd Maryland Army National Guard Civil Support Team.

Grimberg and its design partner completed value engineering solutions that allowed the team to complete the project within the owner’s budget limitations. The company completed the renovation, which included energy-efficient systems and additional sustainable design measures, to the owner’s complete satisfaction and received an Association of General Contractors Merit Award as a result.

Overview

The 32nd Maryland Army National Guard Civil Support Team is a member of the Maryland Guard Joint Forces Headquarters, which supports civil authorities during domestic chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and explosive (CBRNE) incidents by identifying CBRNE agents/substances, assessing current and projected consequences, advising on response measures, and assisting with appropriate requests for additional state support.

To facilitate this unit’s critical operations, Grimberg and its design partner performed the comprehensive design and renovation of an historic, 14,580-square-foot vehicle maintenance facility. The contractor gutted the entire interior of the building, leaving the historic brick and wood exterior envelope intact.

Grimberg then replaced interior partitions, all interior utilities, and floor slabs, as well as designed and constructed offices, training areas, kitchenette and break areas, and vehicle maintenance spaces for emergency response vehicles.

Work also included the installation of energy-efficient window and HVAC systems, including extensive ductwork and natural gas piping. The renovated building is LEED certifiable.

Grimberg also installed new state-of-the-art telecommunications and data systems, a complex sprinkler and fire alarm system, and new electrical service.
