Department of the Navy: Indian Head, MD
The P-176 project was a Navy LMACC task order involving the design/build new construction of an operational support facility at the Navy’s secure Indian Head Location. Grimberg and its design team incorporated sustainable design features, including energy-efficient mechanical and electrical systems, throughout the LEED certified and Energy Policy Act of 2005-compliant facility.
Overview
The P-176 facility is linked to the military’s joint explosive ordnance disposal and improvised explosive device (IED) research efforts and is designed to serve as a program command and control center for associated Army, Navy, and Air Force research worldwide. As such, the facility is also a critical component in the war on terror, including counter-operations research.
The project involved the construction of a secure and classified administrative and operational support facility with state-of-the-art video teleconferencing, secure conferencing, and satellite communications capabilities.
Grimberg implemented sustainable design features throughout the project, including energy-efficient HVAC, mechanical, and electrical systems. Building systems also included plumbing, fire protection, telecommunications, and information systems, as well as state-of-the-art energy monitoring and control units. Grimberg also performed site improvements, drainage, utility work, and paving, as well as all additional work relevant to new construction projects.
Notably, the project was performed in a sensitive wetlands area. As a result, Grimberg developed detailed wetlands protection plans and coordinated closely with the Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) throughout the task order, including via numerous face-to-face meetings and status reviews at the MDE headquarters in Baltimore.
