Highlighted Green Construction Experience
P-187 Joint Counter Improvised Explosive Device (IED) Lab

Department of the Navy: Indian Head, MD

The P-187 project was a design/build order that involved the construction of a state-of-the-art, energy-efficient research and development facility for the Department of the Navy.

Grimberg completed the LEED certified project to the Navy’s total satisfaction and the contractor received excellent project ratings as well.

Overview

The P-187 contract required the design and construction of a research and development building that included administrative offices, laboratories, and related spaces. Grimberg installed electrical and mechanical systems that included fire protection, information systems, intrusion systems, energy monitoring and control, plumbing, and HVAC systems. The company also completed site utilities and drainage systems, as well as all other systems and equipment relevant to new construction.

In addition, Grimberg and its design team began the project by conducting a series of studies to establish the optimum architectural/engineering systems required for the building’s complex operations. The contractor performed all work at the Navy’s secure Indian Head location.

Grimberg implemented sustainable design features throughout the P-187 construction, including energy-efficient HVAC systems and controls and additional energy-saving mechanical and electrical systems. The contractor met the criteria for LEED certification and, as a result, the facility:

  • Conserves energy
  • Conserves water
  • Provides a healthy and safe occupant environment
  • Reduces waste
  • Lowers operating costs
  • Reduces harmful greenhouse gas emissions
  • Demonstrates environmental stewardship and social responsibility
