Design/Build P-187 Joint Counter Improvised Explosive Device (IED) Laboratory
Department of the Navy, Indian Head, Maryland

OVERVIEW

The P-187 Laboratory project involved the design and construction of a complex, state-of-the-art, and LEED-certifiable office and laboratory building. The facility provides test and analysis services for improvised explosive devices (IEDs). As such, the project is also a critical component in the military's counter-terrorism operations, as well as a critical element in its counter-operations research.

The John C. Grimberg Co. (Grimberg) was the prime contractor on the project and served as both general and mechanical contractor. The company successfully constructed the facility in compliance with Department of Defense (DOD) and Anti-Terrorism/Force Protection (AT/FP) standards, and constructed the laboratory as a Sensitive Compartmented Information Facility (SCIF) with a secure communications network and perimeter.

Notable Features

Grimberg installed a building system with state-of-the-art technologies that will help the Navy conduct counter-terrorism operations for decades. This 26,250 square-foot, two-story facility features a sophisticated weapons and engineering laboratory complex, office, operations and administrative spaces, and an NFPA sprinkler and alarm system. The facility also required the construction of associated research, flexible-use, and highly secure/SCIF areas, as well as advanced communications rooms and systems to link the facility's research efforts to DOD sites worldwide via secure communications networks.

The contractor enhanced the P-187 Laboratory's security by implementing a controlled perimeter, blast-resistant glazing, a mass notification system, and vehicle access control in conformance with DOD Unified Facilities Criteria. Other notable features included HVAC with energy management and control systems, LEED, ADAAG, and UFAS compliance.
